"NO EPONA!"
"It's dead.  There's nothing you can do for it.  Now hurry and get on the balloon!"
"Why should I?  What did you ever do make me want to go with you?"
"Nothing, but I'm starting with saving your life.  This island is falling apart, and as it stands, I'm the only way off it.  So hurry up and get on!"

Writing starter 46

"I just don't think it would work."
"Well it depends entirely on which ones we bring back."
"What happens if they defeat the zombies?"
"We'll just kill them."
"How is that an answer?  Nobody knows how to hunt dinosaurs.  Even if we do kill them, what do we do about killing them again?"
"I hadn't thought of the possibility of zombie dinosaurs... I guess we couldn't bring the Tyrannosaurus back.  They're skull is as hard as a diamond you know."
"I'm aware.  You know there is no way to bring the dinosaurs back anyway.  We couldn't do that before the zombie threat."
"Technically we would be bringing them back as a zombie in the first place.  That is the way we would do it."

"What do you think is the best movie ever?"
"The Hobbit series."
"No way, The Hobbit is good, but its nowhere near as good as The Dark Knight Returns."
"Don't you mean The Dark Knight Rises?"
"No, its an animated 2 part movie."
"No way can the best movie ever be an animated movie nobody has heard about."
"Plenty of people have heard about it.  If you are a Batman fan at all its a must watch."
"Well not everyone is a Batman fan."
"Yes they are."
"Good point."
"But the best movie really can't be an animated movie."
"What about Avatar or Frozen?  They were considered great movies."
"That's different they're 3D."
"It's not different, and this entire argument is based on opinion."

How could he tell everyone?  He knew it was supposed to be a secret.  If he was here I would have half a mind to strangle him.  If I hadn't told him, nobody would have found out.  Well, nobody really knows it was me, but I do.

Hi, I'm Stan, the high school janitor.

Yesterday, something freaky happened.  There was a meteor that crashed in the school, and I guess since I took a sick day, I was the only one unaffected by the radiation.

Everyone has turned into giant alligators and reside in the plumbing and the sewer system.

There once was a duck, who was afraid of the water.  He would sit there all day at the shore, watching his friends swimming.  Until one day, a Lion came to the shore.
"Don't eat me!" The duck quickly remarked.
"Relax," said the Lion "I can not eat you, because I have no teeth.  Why are you not with the other ducks?"
"Because I'm afraid of the water"
"Well, I may not have any teeth, but I still face my fears.  The water won't hurt you."
"But what if I sink?"
"Impossible.  You were made to float."

It was a quiet Christmas morning, when everyone was asleep.  There were but 2 children awake.  They couldn't sleep, they were too excited.  In a few short hours they would be opening presents!  They sat at the window, staring at the snow, when suddenly something changed.  The snow wasn't snow.  It started changing color, changing to blue and pink.  It was no longer cold, and no longer water,  it was cotton candy! They woke their parents who then called the neighbors, who called their neighbors and neighbors.  The candy was plush, and sweet, and colorful.  But soon the real reason is revealed.  A mad scientist had changed the weather to make everyone eat the candy, which made them want to buy a strange pet from that weird store on 3rd street.

Writing starter 39

Down on 3rd street, there is a strange pet shop, called pink kittens.  Which is ironic because they don't sell kittens, or pink.  They sell genetically altered pets, mouse-ferrets, dogfish, guinea-rabbits, all sorts of weird animals, in all sorts of colors and patterns.  The thing is they are made by a mad scientist who may be from the future, because even though it's 2020, not much has changed since 2015.

Writing starter 38

I remember when I was a kid, there was this guy at the end of the street who literally ate everything.  He lived in a chewed up house, his pool was always empty because he drank out of it, and the neighborhood pets were afraid of him.

Clarence the cow was fast asleep. He was dreaming about lying in a field of hay. That was his favorite kind of dream. Just then, in his dream, a huge black cloud drifted in the sky above him. He looked up and stared at the cloud for a few seconds. That’s when he realized that it wasn’t a cloud and it wasn’t a dream. It was a nightmare.

A duck walks up to your main character and says, “Why didn’t you see the tree? You were looking right at it.”
"I didn't see it because it doesn't exist."
"Of course it exists, you are talking to a duck."
"Good point."

"The Great Deku Tree was back there, don't you want to talk to him?"
"No, he won't do anything for me, so why even try."
"Why try?  Because the only reason we are here is because the Hero of Time went to see the Tree, and he had no reason to go."
"Well I'm not the hero of anything."
"No, you're not. Not yet."
"Not ever."

The craziest part about my family is their ability to time things.  We never think anything of timing at all, yet things end up strange anyway.  For instance, just two days ago I got my wisdom teeth pulled.  Yeah, ouch.  But now, my Dad, 60 years old, is getting his pulled, tomorrow.

Writing starter 30

When I was young, I remember my favorite movie was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Or maybe it was the first Spiderman movie, I'm not sure.  I remember I would watch those two movies a lot though.  I loved those movies, which made no sense because both had a scene that absolutely terrified me.  In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the scene with the ride down the chocolate river scared me.  In Spiderman, the moment Norman Osborn became Green Goblin scared me.  I remember I watched these movies (as my child mind thought) 14 times in a day.  I have no idea why I loved these two movies, but I did, and now that I think about it, the scariest scene in the Chocolate Factory is when Augustus is stuck in the tube, because I'm claustrophobic.

Poem 7

The heat was coming like a snail on ice,
Spring was almost non-existent this year,
The cold was as bad as a head of lice,
Seeing it go may make some shed a tear.

The house would finally heat all around,
The dog would endlessly shed its winter coat,
The ice would melt without making a sound,
It finally melts and ends up afloat.

My chores will be back for spring cleaning time,
It won't be stuffy with windows open,
My parents will be buying stuff like limes,
I'll be sick of doing everything, slopin'.

Green grass would replace the snow on the lawn,
Revealing where all the dog shit has gone.

I'll never forget how my cousin Conner was always a smartass.  One time, when all the cousins were kids, we played hide and seek, and had one rule: don't hide in my parents room.  We looked for Conner for an hour before my parents came out of the room and said he bribed them to let him in.

Poem 6

At home in Hamburg,
My parents were fighting,
They got a divorce.

I cried on the deck,
My mom came to comfort me,
I sat there all day.

But it isn't that bad,
They are still friends,
They work hard to raise us.

We're a pain in the ass.

Memory is vile.
There's always something,
You don't want to remember.
Sad or happy.

There's always something.
Fuzzy or clear,
Good or bad,
A want or a need.

Old or new,
Fake or real,
A want or a need,
I'd rather it be multiple choice.

Fake or real.
You don't want to remember.
I'd rather it be multiple choice.
Memory is vile.

Anna

Anna

"I asked how could you do this to me? How could you ruin me?"
"..."
"How can he not feel guilty?  Is this just how I'm supposed to react to these kinds of situations?"
"..."
"WHY WON'T YOU ANSWER ME!?"
"Because they are not my questions to answer" I said.
"If they are not my therapist's questions, then whose are they?"
"They are yours, Milly, and I can not answer them for you."
"Why not?  Isn't that your job?" Milly questioned.
"No, my job is to help you answer your own questions."
"Well I'm not going to stand by and burn my money."
"Then get out.  I didn't ask you to sort my life out.  You came to me for help, not a free ride."
"I guess you're not what I'm looking for then."
Milly left the room slamming the door.  I'm is finally done with that idiot.  At last I can take my lunch break.  I looked at my clock.  Damn, an hour past lunchtime.  As I go to grab my lunch I looked at my desk.  My desk had my name, Lionel Prescott, carved into the wood.  Looked at the picture frame on my desk, ah, Anna, how I miss you. It's only been 4 years since you passed away...
I have to hurry and finish my lunch, my next patient will be in within the hour.  At least I get a lunch break today, its been weeks since I've had the privilege of an hour to myself.
"Mr. Prescott?"
It was my assistant Cathy, she's calling to tell me the worst news, my next patient was here.
"Yes, Cathy?"
"Are you okay?  Milly stormed out quite angrily."
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"So when should I set up his next appointment?"
"Funny."
"Well at least he's not your problem anymore."
At least…

The following week I had gone off the edge, apparently.  I had no idea what happened, I blacked out for almost an entire day.  I was falling deeper and deeper in, closing in on the point of no return.  Then my brother pulled me out.  Jeremy’s down to earth personality is what keeps me from going insane.
“Jeremy, why did this happen?”
“you have to answer that.”
Great, now my brother is the therapist.
“I would rather not.”
“I’m the only person who cares about your feelings right now Lionel, why wouldn’t you want to tell me?”
“He said they have her”
“Who?”
“Anna.”
----------
Nothing
----------
The next day I awoke.  I was in an alleyway.  Jeremy was beside me.  I was sore.
“Rise and Shine.” Jeremy said
“I don’t want to”
“Well you’re already awake, I meant we should go to that restaurant across the street named Rise and Shine.”
“No, I just wanna go home.”
“Well I’m thirsty, so I’m goin in.”
Of course I went with him, as if he left me a choice.  As we approached the restaurant, I noticed there was a cop car outside.  I stopped my brother.
“What are you doing?”
“There’s a cop there, what will we do?”
“Relax, he can’t possibly know anything about what happened last night.”
“What did happen last night?”
“I’ll tell you when we get in there.”
We walked inside, the place looked in bad shape, there was paint peeling off the walls.  I looked around the booths and there was the cop, sitting in the corner booth by himself.  I was paranoid, with good reason, I guess.  This all seemed so strange though, like I had been here before.
“This way please.” the waitress said
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I was day dreaming.”
Me and my brother got to our booth, far away from the cop, thankfully.
“What can I get you to drink?”
Tea.  My brother wants tea, just as always.
“I’ll have a cup of tea.”
“Hmmf.  I’ll have some coffee.”
“Anything else?”
“No, we’re good, and we aren't having anything to eat.”
The waitress walked away.
“What happened to me last night?”
“You snapped.”
“How? How did I snap?”
“One of your new clients came in, and he said he knew what really happened.”
“To what? To who?”
“It’s whom.”
“Now is not the time for that, Jeremy.”
“He told you he knew where Anna was, that she was alive.”
I was breathless, Anna had passed years ago, I remembered the date, December 4th, 2009.
“You ran out of your office to go find her, he said she was at 82nd Weston Street.”
“Well lets go save her!”
“No, no, see that’s what happened last time.  You blacked out and went to go find her.  You remember you kept me in the dark with your relationship with Anna? Well I’m starting to get a better sense of why.”
The waitress came by and handed us our drinks.  I would start drinking my coffee right away, because I do like black coffee, but it was way to hot, I would burn my tongue, so I put some cream and sugar in it.
“What does that mean?  And how did you learn all of this?”
“Cathy told me the address and I followed you because I know you get in trouble sometimes and I was worried.  You really don’t remember this do you?”
“No, now please continue.”
“Okay, so you went to the address, and it was some old warehouse.  She wasn’t in there.  I heard you curse at her, at Anna.  That's when It started to make sense.”
I didn't remember any of this, which astonished me because I had a great memory, and not once have I ever blacked out.
“You had nothing to go on, but you continued to go to 43rd on Mann.”
“That was our old apartment.”
“At this point I could just follow you without you noticing I was even there, and I was right next to you.  You went in and wrecked the place, like you were looking for something.  Were you?”
I took a drink of my coffee, and burnt the roof of my mouth a little, I never learn.
“I, I think so.  I was looking for her necklace, but I couldn’t find it, so I looked in her trunk and found a picture of her with another guy.”
“I know, she looked happy, and your yelled that she was yours, that she couldn't do that.  You threw the frame on the ground and started tearing the place apart.  The weird part is you still live there, don’t you?”
“I did?  So if I go back to my apartment, it’s gonna be completely trashed?”
“Yup.  Why had you not opened the trunk before?”
“Because I- I don’t know.”
“Come on man, dig deeper.”
I had already been here, this is exactly the kind of stuff I would say to my patients.  But, its weird, I don’t remember many patients I had.  I actually only remember Milly.  That name… It sounds so familiar…
“Lionell?  You still with me?”
“You, you’re not my...”
“Your what?”
“Brother?”
“No, of course not.  Don’t you remember? I’m your therapist. It’s me Jeremy.”
“Jeremy… Preston…”
“Yes.”
“That means, this whole time… I’ve been… oh god.  Anna! She left me… be- because I cheated on her, with Milly!  And Cathy?”
“She’s my assistant, who works at the front desk.”
“The trunk… was my reminder of her… and I ruined it by opening it.”
“At last, we had a breakthrough. Lionell, we’ve been at you for 4 years since you came in here.  and today is the first breakthrough we’ve ever had.  I’m glad we got this far.  But it seems like a good time to give you a rest.  Please, Lionell, go home, its been a rough day, you need to rest up and I need to eat my lunch.”
I set my tea down, said farewell, and went home.

Poem 3 (Joker)

Purple is ominous,
Dark and creepy,
Yet light,
Shady yet beautiful,
It sounds like water rushing,
and feels cold and full,
It goes hand in hand with green,
And wears like its a cozy suit,
It requires a smile,
And someone in pursuit.

My dog

The best thing about Trax is that he's furry,
Soft, as wool

No, the best thing is that he sleeps next to me,
Taking space, stubborn

No, the best thing is that he want to protect me,
Barking at passing people, the mailman

No, the best thing is that he is smart,
He knows where he is, where home is

No, the best thing is that he is loyal,
He would never leave, he knows his family

No, the best thing is that he knows when I'm sick,
He will come to comfort me, because

He knows.

The thing that interests me most that is irreverent is that I want to be a programmer.  I know I would never be able to do anything that is on a huge scale, such as program my own game, or work at Valve.  I just think it would be cool to be able to do these sorts of things.

Writing Starter 8

Life as a cartoon character would be much easier.  If I were a cartoon character, I could do anything I wanted.  From things that are simply not breathing, to something like flying.  As a cartoon character there are no limits.  I could stretch my arms to become a bird, then fly to Antarctica to grow fur and live in the cold with the penguins.  Then I would swim across the Arctic Ocean to Australia's shores and survive in the outback for 3 years.  I wouldn't even need gills to swim across the ocean, because I can do what I want.  When I get back from the outback I will be a changed man, because surviving in the outback has changed my views on life drastically.  Now that I am a changed man, I go home to watch cartoons.  That is what my life would be like if I were a cartoon.

Flash Fiction questions

  1. According to the author, how is the narrative form of the novel particularly suited to America?
  2. How does Mr. Faulkner define flash fiction?
  3. What is gained in “writing short”?
  4. What must each line of a short short story do?
  5. What do you think Mr. Faulkner means by “Such evocative, fragmentary brevity makes this Twitter and Facebook era perfect for flash fiction. Flash allows literature to be a part of our everyday life, even if we are strange multitasking creatures addled by a world that demands more, more, more”? Do you agree?

1) The narrative form of a novel is very detailed, and America has become accustomed to it.

2) Flash fiction was described as a story that is under 1000 words.

3) When “writing short” you have to use your creativity to see how short you can keep your story without losing story.

4) Each line of a flash story must carry symbolic weight.

5) Mr. Faulkner means to say that with Facebook and Twitter, these are perfect ways to show others your flash stories.

Flash was running faster than possible, he was determined to win, Mirror Master was confused as to where he went.  Mirror knew Flash was fast, but he had no idea he was THIS fast.  Flash was running beyond the point of no return, he was fading, turning into pure energy.  Soon he became a new kind of energy, never know to any living creature.  Flash struck Mirror Master, shattering one half of him as well as completely melting his other half.  Although this was not murder, Mirror Master was too much of a coward.  He would never actually be in the field, he had been controlling a minion.
The world threat had been solved, but Flash was unable to stop.  He was sprinting so fast, he had no chance of stopping without sacrificing himself.  Flash was still speeding up, because he had no chance of slowing down.  He began to break the time barrier, traveling further into the future.  He had no choice, it was either stop and face unknown consequences, or continue on, until he no longer could.  So he decided to stop.  Flash blacked out.  Nothing.
Flash woke up in the Bat-cave, unable to move.  Batman walked out from the shadows, and explained that he wouldn’t be able to move for days.  Batman saved him from death,  Flash asked how Batman saved him, but Batman only said, “You don’t wanna know”.

Talia: It's Michael's fault, he accused me of cheating!

Michael: No, you TOLD ME you cheated on me!

Ms. Green: I don't care who did what, go the office, both of you!

Michael: But it's over, we straightened things out.

Ms. Green: It sounds like you have done anything but "straighten things out".

Talia: Yeah, I'm not done!

Ms. Green: Office, now!

The Giant Dilemma

In a land made completely of mystery, there lived many creatures.  The most sophisticated race was the giant, and they were everywhere.  Thought there was one giant, who was the most brilliant giant of all.  Giants were mainly peaceful creatures, but if anything were to steal or wrong them, they would rip them apart.  Giants were extremely resistant to the cold, and lived at the peaks of mountains.  This one giant, his name was Cornelius, and he was descending into madness.  He felt that he was crowded by stupidity, and that he was far more superior to the others.
Cornelius lived in a cave, because he seemed to be the only giant without a great resistance to the cold.  This happened to be a great problem, because his father was Ymir, lord of the ice giants.  Ymir felt ashamed of his son and pushed him to do other things with his brethren.  Cornelius would not associate himself with other giants,  he preferred seclusion.  So he would let the days pass by, sitting in his cave.  Constantly thinking of a way to get off the mountain without freezing to death.  He had tried many times to leave, but was always stopped by his father, who forbid him to leave.
Cornelius thought of a plan though, this time, one that would work for sure.  He would take the bark from the sleeping tree at his camp, and use it as a sled to get down the mountain.  Cornelius fashioned a blade out of stone and cut the bark off.  He went to the safety of his cave and waited for the right time.  Within a week, his father and most of the giants went hunting, Cornelius took his opportunity, and sled down the mountain.  He had to dodge trees and rocks and strange new animals he had never seen.  Near the bottom, he hit a rock, and his sled broke into pieces.  Cornelius was sent tumbling down the final hill, and landed in a hot spring.  He found the perfect spot for him to live out his days.  There was a cave, it was warm, and he was with peaceful creatures.

You’re digging in your backyard when all of sudden you hit something. You can’t tell what it is so you thrust the shovel into the dirt one more time.  You suddenly hear a crack.  You continue to unearth the mysterious object.  Pulling dirt out of the hole with your bare hands, you find a skeleton.  The skull was broken in… oops.  What should you do? Call the police? Rebury it?  You choose to rebury it with a gravestone that says Skelly.

My favorite kind of creative expression lately has been movies.  I recently have been watching a lot of movies and they give me different views on many things.  For instance, My favorite movie is Silver Linings Playbook.  The movie give a look into what it can be like having a mental disorder, such as bipolar disorder.  This is meaningful to me because my Mom has bipolar disorder, and she says that the movie perfectly shows what could happen if she didn’t take her meds.
